Testimonials from involved young people

Marion Bourdages-Perreault

29 years old, Bonaventure.
How did you get involved in the past, and what are you doing now?

Formerly a member of the coordination committee for the Bonaventure branch of Quebec Solidaire. Currently involved in an interest group focusing on systemic racism in the association of speech therapists and audiologists (with an emphasis on regional issues). Organizing and participating in women’s sports teams (softball and hockey) in Bonaventure.

Why did you decide to get more involved in your community?

To be a part of the change (especially when it comes to the environment, education and social equality) and to revitalize the region.

Tell us about your favourite volunteering experience

Volunteering in the QS 2018 provincial election with all the other volunteers in my riding. We touched on some important issues and had some wonderful conversations with people in their living rooms. I felt as if we made some change on a small scale!

Why should young people get involved in their communities?

Because when everyone gets involved, our communities stay energized, healthy, and remain open to change. I really like the idea of small-scale changes in little towns that lead to little positive effects, one step at a time. Small is beautiful.

What are your future plans?

I will, of course, stay involved in education as a speech therapist at the Centre de services scolaire René-Lévesque. I’d eventually like to return as a member on the QS Bonaventure brand coordination committee (maybe for the 2022 elections). I’d also like to volunteer at the new Gaspésie Sud social pediatric centre, if they need anything.

I’m also thinking about getting more involved in the Baie-des-Chaleurs animal protection network (I love cats!!). Otherwise, I’ve got a lot of other social involvements, but I don’t have enough time to balance everything out. I’ve got lots of great ideas and good intentions, but we’ll see how I can fit it all into my schedule.
